Flying United and planning to listen to music, watch a film or scroll through videos? Use headphones for the sound. United’s current Contract of Carriage explicitly includes passengers listening to audio or video without headphones among the reasons it may refuse transport.
This guide checks the rule as it stands on September 26, 2026. The official document displays a May 11, 2026 revision date. That is the document’s revision date, not evidence that the headphone requirement began that day or is a new announcement this week.
What does United’s headphone rule say?
Under Rule 21, section H, item 22, the contract lists: “Passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content.”
The practical distinction is between private listening and sound playing into the cabin. Keep music, podcasts, video soundtracks and social-media clips in your headphones. If you do not have a working pair, keep the device muted; captions or reading give you something to do without speaker audio.
Can United remove a passenger over this?
Rule 21 gives United the right to refuse transportation temporarily or permanently, or remove a passenger from the aircraft, for the listed reasons. These are powers the airline reserves. The wording does not prescribe an automatic permanent ban for every headphone violation.
Follow the crew’s instructions and stop playback if asked. Treat the requirement as part of preparing for a United flight, rather than assuming that low speaker volume makes it acceptable.
Do you need a particular type of headphones?
The headphone clause does not specify a brand or require active noise cancellation. The useful test before departure is whether your own headphones connect to the device you intend to use. Wired headphones need a compatible socket or adapter; wireless headphones need sufficient charge and a working connection.
For families travelling together, check each device that will play sound. A downloaded programme is only ready for the flight when its audio setup is ready too.
Can Bluetooth headphones connect to the seatback screen?
On a United aircraft equipped with Bluetooth-enabled seatback entertainment, yes. United’s official pairing instructions say to select the Bluetooth icon on the screen, enable Bluetooth, disconnect the headphones from other devices, put them in pairing mode, and select them from the available-device list.
Those instructions apply to an equipped screen. They are not a guarantee that every flight or seat has the feature. Connecting to your own phone and connecting to the aircraft’s entertainment system are separate steps; check what is available on your flight.
What if you forget your headphones?
Ask a flight attendant whether a suitable pair is available. Do not make your entertainment plan depend on receiving one or on it fitting your own device. Until you have a working connection, leave the sound off. A book, saved reading or a captioned video is a useful backup.
