A week away can leave several different records: a country colored on a world map, a line following a road trip, a flight between two cities, and an airport you returned to. The best travel map app depends on which of those you want to remember.
These four choices serve different purposes. This comparison uses their published documentation, rather than hands-on testing. SkyStamp is made by emonster, the publisher of this Journal.
Start with the record you want
- Countries and a wish list: consider Visited.
- A route with photos and stories: consider Polarsteps.
- Flights and flying history: consider Flighty.
- Individual airports and return visits: consider SkyStamp.
Use your own consistent definition of a visit. A connection through an airport can belong in an airport collection without meaning that you explored the country outside it.
Visited: for a country map and places you want to go
Visited suits the traveler who wants to mark countries visited, lived in or still on a wish list. It is available on iOS and Android. Its free country map and basic statistics provide a broad view of where you have been.
Pro adds features such as city maps, itineraries and additional regional maps. The developer offers monthly, yearly and lifetime options. Check the current feature split before paying, especially if cities rather than countries are your main interest.
The developer says Visited does not use GPS tracking. That does not make it a device-only record: signing up lets entered travel information be stored on its servers across devices. Review its privacy notice before adding sensitive dates. We could not confirm offline behavior or a structured export workflow from the official pages reviewed; check those points if they are essential to you.
Polarsteps: for the route and story of a trip
Polarsteps is a closer fit when the journey between places matters. Its iOS and Android apps can record a route and combine it with photos and written steps. A train journey followed by several days on the road makes sense as one trip story.
Core planning, tracking and sharing remain free. Optional Polarsteps Plus subscriptions add features such as 3D maps and extra statistics. Printed Travel Books are separate purchases.
Tracking and some editing can continue without internet, then synchronize later. Background recording needs the appropriate permissions, and offline support does not mean every map or planning feature is available. Follow airline instructions about device settings during a flight.
Choose the trip’s audience before sharing. An Only me setting limits other viewers; it does not mean the service cannot process the trip. Polarsteps also documents an account-data archive containing photos and trip information, with much of the non-photo data in JSON. That archive is not a promise of automatic transfer into another app.
Flighty: for flights and a flying-history map
Flighty Passport records the flying part of travel, with a flight map and statistics such as distance and time. Flighty supports iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. Choose it when individual flights and their history matter more than the roads or walks between them.
The free app includes core flight tracking and Passport. Its pricing FAQ describes a year of Passport; Pro unlocks unlimited history and additional alerts, syncing and import features. Separately, past-flight import has a 365-day lookback on Free. That import limit should not be read as a claim that older stored records are deleted.
Check current Pro offers in your storefront. A monthly equivalent displayed beside an annual price is not the same as monthly billing.
Offline mode displays information received before the connection was lost, with estimates; fresh flight updates still need connectivity. Flighty’s current privacy policy covers its app and website and describes information that may be collected, including contact details, travel information and usage data. Read the policy and review permissions before connecting optional import or sharing features.
SkyStamp: for airports you have personally collected
SkyStamp is an iPhone airport passport. It keeps confirmed airports and dated return visits, including visits you add manually. It suits someone who wants to remember the airports themselves. It does not provide live flight tracking or delay alerts.
The first five unique airports are free. Completing one ticket share adds five bonus slots. The optional one-time Lifetime Access purchase unlocks unlimited airports and features including advanced statistics and CSV transfer. A later visit to an airport already collected does not use another unique-airport slot.
No account is required for the core collection. Confirmed visits stay on device, and raw location history is not uploaded. Core collection features work offline; map imagery and weather may need internet. Optional analytics and diagnostics have controls in Settings. The personal airport passport guide explains a worked example and the Lifetime CSV export.
Choose what you want to keep after the trip
If keeping a copy matters, check the actual export process before building a large collection. A shareable map image and a structured data archive serve different purposes. You may also want two records: a trip diary for the story and a flight or airport collection for the places you return to.
