Your Carry-On Is Being Gate-Checked: What to Remove First

The best time to prepare for gate-checking is while your bag is still open at home. A small essentials pouch makes the handover easier.

You packed for the cabin, but the gate agent needs your suitcase to travel in the hold. Before it leaves your hands, take a moment to move the things that must stay with you into your permitted personal item.

Remove power banks and spare lithium batteries

The FAA’s baggage guidance says spare lithium batteries, portable chargers and electronic cigarettes must remain in the cabin when a bag is checked at the gate or planeside. Protect batteries against damage and short circuits; a loose battery should not touch keys or coins. Vapes also need protection against accidental activation.

Keeping a power bank in the cabin does not automatically mean you may use or charge it there. Airline limits and onboard storage rules can be stricter. Check your operator with the SkyStamp Power Bank Flight-Safe tool before boarding.

Keep the things you cannot easily replace

The Department of Transportation’s packing advice recommends keeping critical items out of checked luggage. Use this quick check:

  • Travel documents: passport, identification, boarding pass and anything you need for the next border or connection.
  • Personal essentials: medication, glasses, keys and the items you depend on during the journey.
  • Valuables: wallet, jewellery and fragile or irreplaceable belongings.
  • A small arrival kit: a change of underwear or a light spare outfit, plus permitted toiletries for the first night.

Keep your phone and laptop with you when possible. A battery installed in a device is different from a spare battery: if the airline permits the device in checked baggage, FAA guidance requires it to be completely switched off and protected from damage and accidental activation. Sleep mode is not fully off. Ask the agent if you cannot safely repack.

Ask where the bag will come back

Before handing it over, ask: “Will I collect this beside the aircraft, at baggage claim, or at my final destination?” Check the destination on the tag and keep the receipt. A photograph of the bag and tag gives you a useful record without searching through pockets later.

Put the answer in a note alongside your connection details. Do not assume that the collection arrangement on your last flight applies to this one.

Make the next handover easier

Pack your essentials pouch near the top of the suitcase, and leave enough space in your personal item to hold it. Keep within the airline’s cabin allowance. Add this check to the free packing checklist so a last-minute gate change does not turn into a rushed search.

If the bag does not appear where you were told to collect it, read what to do before leaving the airport.
